2) Hazards Identification
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1200: Hazardous (compressed gas/pressure hazard).
- Appearance: Colorless gas. Emergency overview: Contents under pressure; may displace oxygen; rapid expansion can cause frostbite.
- Routes of exposure: Inhalation, skin, eyes.
- Eyes/Skin: Risk of cold burns/frostbite from liquefied gas.
- Inhalation: Asphyxiant at high concentrations; CNS effects (headache, dizziness, drowsiness).
- Chronic effects: Mainly CNS-related symptoms at elevated levels.
3) Composition / Information on Ingredients
- Carbon Dioxide (CAS 124-38-9) > 99% (by volume for gas)
4) First Aid Measures
- Eyes: Flush with water ≥15 min. For frostbite, use lukewarm water; seek medical attention if needed.
- Skin: Wash with soap/water; for frostbite, warm water immersion (100–110°F / 38–43°C) for 20–40 min; seek care.
- Inhalation: Move to fresh air immediately; if symptoms persist or breathing stops, get medical help.
- Ingestion: Unlikely (gas); seek advice if occurs.
5) Fire Fighting Measures
- Flammability: Not flammable; cylinders may rupture in heat.
- Media: Use media appropriate for surrounding fire; cool cylinders with water spray.
- PPE: SCBA and full protective gear for firefighters.
6) Accidental Release Measures
- Evacuate; ventilate; avoid breathing gas; move leaking cylinders to ventilated area if safe.
7) Handling and Storage
- Use in well-ventilated areas; do not puncture/incinerate; close valve when not in use; do not refill disposables.
- Store cool, dry, ventilated; protect from heat > 52°C (125°F); secure cylinders.
8) Exposure Controls / Personal Protection
- Limits (CO₂): ACGIH TLV TWA 5,000 ppm; STEL 30,000 ppm. OSHA PEL TWA 5,000 ppm.
- Ventilation: Provide adequate exhaust/general ventilation.
- Eye/Face: Safety glasses/goggles; Skin: protective/insulated gloves for cold; Respiratory: use approved respirator if ventilation inadequate.
9) Physical and Chemical Properties
- Colorless, odorless gas (compressed liquefied gas in cartridge)
- Vapor density ~1.5 (air=1); Vapor pressure ~43,700 mmHg @ 21.1°C
- Boiling point: −78.3°C (sublimes)
- Soluble in water; Flash point: not applicable
10) Stability and Reactivity
- Stable under normal use; avoid heat/sunlight; incompatible with reactive metals, strong acids/oxidizers.
11) Toxicological Information
- Asphyxiant at high concentrations; CNS effects (headache, dizziness). Frostbite from liquefied gas.
- Not classified as carcinogen by IARC/NTP/OSHA/ACGIH.
12) Ecological Information
- Not expected to be acutely toxic to aquatic life; CO₂ is a greenhouse gas.
13) Disposal Considerations
- Follow federal/state/local regs; do not vent large quantities in confined areas; do not puncture/incinerate cylinders.
14) Transport Information
- US DOT: UN1013; Receptacles, small, containing gas (CO₂ cartridges); Class 2.2; SP A14; 49 CFR 173.306 (LQ may apply).
- IATA: Often excepted under SP A98 (verify current rules).
- IMDG: Often excepted under SP 191 (verify current rules).
15) Regulatory Information
- OSHA HazCom: Hazardous (pressure hazard).
- SARA 311/312: Pressure hazard = Yes; others = No.
- FDA: CO₂ GRAS for food use.
- WHMIS: Compressed Gas (Gases Under Pressure).
